Greece /Kreeka

Greece is a perfect vacation destination since it has something to offer for everyone. It has history, beautiful nature, perfect beaches with crystal clear water, pretty mountains, tasteful food (specially Greek salad), friendly and helpful locals, amazing wine, many museums, hundreds of archaeological sites, sunny weather all year round, thousands of islands (6,000 islands to be exact, of which only 227 islands are inhabited). The first traces of human habitation in Greece appeared already approximately 120 000-10 000 B.C.

Kreeka on suurepärane puhkusesihtkoht, sest pakub midagi kõigile. Kreekast leiab ajalugu, ilusat loodust, perfektsed rannad oma kristallselge veega, ilusad mäed, maitseva söögi (eriti Kreeka salat), sõbralikud ja abivalmid kohalikud, suurepärane vein, mitmed muuseumid, tuhandeid arheoloogilisi kohti, aastaringselt päikseline ilm, tuhanded saared (täpsemalt öeldes 6000 saart, millest ainult 227 on asustamata). Esimesed inimasutuse jäljed ilmnesid Kreekas juba umbes 120 000 – 10 000 aastat eKr.

D67A4A7C-2BEC-493A-8503-7EFF6B5B2A86Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic is located in Southeast Europe. Greece is most known for being the birthplace of democracy, its artists, famous philosophers and scientists, also for its production of marble, olives and olive oil, feta cheese and of course its picture perfect islands. The population of the country is approximately 10,7 million. The area of the country is 131,957 km2.

Kreeka, ametiliku nimega Hellase vabariik, asub Kagu-Euroopas. 131 957 km2 pindalaga riigi rahvaarv on umbes 10,7 miljonit.

147DFBE2-F6A3-40C4-B026-16F19628D881During our trip we visited Athens and Naxos island.

Reisi jooksul me külastasime Ateenat ja Naxose saart.

Athens is the capital also largest city of Greece. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities with a rich history spanning over 3,400 years, also the oldest capital city in Europe. Athens area is 38,964 km2. The population is 664,046 together with its urban area around 3 million. Urban density in Athens urban area is 7,500/km2. Athens is the southernmost capital on the European mainland and the warmest major city in Europe. There are many ancient monuments and works of art in the city. It is really easy to get to the city center from the airport. Just in front of the airport is a metro and also train station. Don’t trust Google Maps when trying to find the metro stop, just follow the signs “to the trains” and it will lead you to the correct place. I really recommend Aegean Airlines for flying to Greece. I have never before seen that the airlines company offers candies, food and also free wine for everybody, some books for the children.

Ateena on üks maailma vanimaid linnu. Linna rikas ajalugu ulatub üle 3,400 aasta tagasi. Ateena on samuti vanim pealinn Euroopas. Ateena pindala on 38,964 km2 ning seal elab umbes 664,046 inimest, koos eeslinnadega on elanike arv umbes kolm miljonit. Asustustihedus Ateenas koos eeslinnadega on 7,500 km2 kohta. Ateena on kõige lõunapoolsem pealinn Euroopa mandriosal ja samuti kõige soojem pealinn Euroopas. Linnas on mitmeid antiikseid monumnete ja kunstiteoseid. Ateena Lennujaamast pääseb väga lihtsalt kesklinna. Kohe lennujaama hoone ees on nii metroo- kui ka rongijaam, lihtsalt jälgi silte “to the trains”.  Ära usalda Google Mapsi, see juhatab väga valesti. Kreekasse minekuks soovitan Aegean Airlines lennufirmat.

IMG_5512The Acropolis of Athens is visible from most parts of the city and it belongs to UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel and contains the remains of several ancient buildings. On the south of the entrance to the Acropolis is the tiny Temple of Athena Nike. At the center of the Acropolis is the Parthenon. East of the entrance is the temple known as the Erechteum. South of the platform that form the top of the Acropolis there are the remains of the ancient Theatre of Dionysus. In Greek, Acropolis means “high city”. The Acropolis of Athens is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00. The ticket price is 20€, reduced price 10€.

Ateena Akropolis on nähtav peaaegu kõigist kohtadest linnas ning see kuulub UNESCO maailmapärandi nimistusse. Ateena Akropol on iidne tsitadell, mis koosneb mitmete iidsete ehitiste varemetest. Akropoli sissepääsust lõunasse jääb pisike Ateena Nike tempel. Akropolise keskmeks on Parthenon. Idapoolses osas on tempel, mida tuntakse Ercheteumi nime all. Akropolist lõunasse jääb iidse Dionysose teatri varemed. Kreeka keeles tähendab akropolis “kõrget linna”. Akropolis on avatud igapäevaselt 08:00-17:00. Sissepääs maksab 20€, sooduspiletiga 10€.

The Parthenon is an enormous temple that dominates the Athenian Acropolis, constructed between 447 and 432 BC and is the most important example of ancient Greek architecture. It was built of white marble, in honor of Athena, the Greek goddess and it is seen as the greatest achievement of the Doric Order and Classical Greece’s most significant building.

Akropolise kõige kuulsam osa on Parthenon. Parthenon on hiiglaslik tempel, mis domineerib Ateena Akropolist. Tempel on ehitatud aastatel 447 kuni 432 eKr ning see on iidse Kreeka arhitektuuri kõige olulisem näide. Parthenon on ehitatud valgest marmorist Kreeka jumalanna Athena auks.

When the theater was first built it probably had wooden seating what were later replaced by stone. The first row was reserved for the most important citizens of Athens who would sit on more comfortable marble seats.

Kõik väärtuslikud iidsed Antiik-Kreeka esemed asuvad just selles muuseumis.

Right next to the Acropolis of Athens is Areopagus Hill where it is possible to enjoy free panoramic views to Athens.

Kohe Akropolise lähedal on Areopaguse mägi, kus saab tasuta nautida suurepäraseid panoraamvaateid Ateenale.

CD1B3965-D5CA-4EFB-B87A-EBB79FB4BCA66F6EC205-F442-47D4-A5CE-A87F95F05FADIn Athens there is the Panathenaic Stadium which was made entirely of white marble in 144 AD. In the 19th century the stadium was dug up and rebuilt. It hosted the first contemporary Olympics in 1896. It is possible to walk along the marble stands where the Athenians once cheered the sportsmen on centuries ago. The running track is also open to visit. The entrance fee is 5€ and it includes an audio guide which gives interesting information abut this landmark. From March to October it is open every day from 08:00 to 19:00 and from November to February it is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00. Not many people know that Athens is the origin of the marathon. We call the endurance run a marathon as a commemoration to the Greek soldier who died announcing the Greek victory over Persia in the Battle of Marathon. The soldier ran from Marathon which is a city in Attica region to Athens to report the Athenian’s victory against the Persians in 490 B.C. The city of Marathon is about 40 km away from Athens. The soldier said “we win” and then collapsed and died.

Ateenas asub Panathenaici staadion, mis on valmistatud täielikult valgest marmorist ja juba aastal 144 pKr. 19. sajandil kaevati staadion üles ja ehitati ümber. Staadionil toimusid esimesed kaasagsed olümpiamängud aastal 1896. Staadionil on võimalik jalutada mööda marmorist tribüüne, kus ateenlased kunagi sajandeid tagasi sportlastele kaasa elasid. Samuti on võimalik külastada jooksurada. Maratoni linn asub umbes 40km kaugusel Ateenast. Kohale jõudes jõudis sõdur vaid öelda “me võitsime” ning varises seejärel kokku ja suri.

I am not talking about nice murals, but really ugly pointlessness scribbles. I think that nice murals is art, but the ones in Athens is really a vandalism. It kind of leaves trashy impression of this ancient city. You can find this trashy graffiti everywhere – on most of the buildings, trash cans, train stations, even the metro trains. Every single thing is covered. I have read that beautifully restored houses usually have only a few days before they are vandalized and covered with ugly graffiti again. I did find some nice street art too.

Ateenas on tõeliselt ilus iidne arhitektuur, samuti on paljud ehitised rikutud koleda graffitiga. Ma ei mõtle siin ilusaid tänavakunsti pilte, vaid koledaid mõttetuid kritseldusi. Mulle väga meeldib ilus tänavakunst, kuid Ateenas toimuv on pigem vandalism.

IMG_5735One really pretty architectural building is the National Library of Greece. The building is designed by the Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and it is a part of his famous Trilogy of neoclassical building together with the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University. Construction of the National Library started in 1887 and was completed 15 years later. In front of the building there is a statue of Panaghis Athanassiou Vallianos who was the merchant and one of the benefactors of the library. Some of the collection of Greek manuscripts in this library are more than 1400 years old.

Üks tõeline arhitekuuripärl on Kreeka Rahvusraamatukogu hoone.

I really liked the cocktails and also food in 360 Cocktail bar. But the A for Athens bar has a better view and service.

Ateenas on mitmeid suurepäraseid baare, kohvikuid ja restorane. Meie külastasime baare A for Athens ja 360 Cocktail bar. Mulle väga meeldisid kokteilid ja söök 360 Cocktail baaris. Samas aga A for Athens baaris oli parem vaade ja teenindus.

C46596F1-FD1A-41E9-8F42-FAB502DB5AD42E2A4E3C-31C2-4E35-9AE8-C775B8240D8FA for Athens bar offers great views to Monastiraki square. Monastiraki is one of the most popular shopping areas in Athens. The square is pretty, colorful and lively. Monastiraki metro station is one of the oldest metro stations in Athens. It displays several archaeological discoveries found on the Hadrian’s Library state. It is really nice area to wander along its avenues and squares. They have many souvenirs shops there, amazing juice bar called Xymopoieio and also Oliveworld store where all the products are made by olive tree. This is amazing, they have all the possible kitchen ware + games, sunglasses, knives, pens and so on, all made of olive wood.

A for Athens baar pakub suurepäraseid vaateid Monastiraki väljakule. Monastiraki on üks Ateena kõige populaarsemaid kaubanduspiirkondi. Väljak on ilus, värviline ja elav. Monastiraki metroojaam on üks vanimaid metroojaamu Ateenas, kus leiab mitmeid Hadriani raamatukogu arheoloogilisi avastusi.

It is called as the old town of Athens. It is also known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods” since it is next to the Acropolis. For me it didn’t leave any memorable impression. It was kind of all about the souvenir stores, hustlers and people inviting you to visit their “special” store, give you “free” bracelets. The neoclassical houses there were super nice though.

Monastiraki kõrval asub Plaka, mis on üks Ateena vanimaid piirkondi. Plakat nimetatakse Ateena vanalinnaks.

A3980398-BDF3-49EB-B4BE-1C34B47C5F8F26B23769-3B44-479A-8B1C-23523BDFFF667DF52B69-1D80-44BF-ADB8-1E88B748B4B9When we were wandering around to find our way to the Panathenaic Stadium we passed this pretty building called the Zappeion, which is situated in the National Gardens of Athens. The building is generally used for official and private meeting and ceremonies. The Zappeion building was used during the 1896 Summer Olympics as the main fencing hall.

Teel Panathenaici Staadioni juurde möödusime sellest ilusast hoonest. Tegemist on Zappeioniga, mis asub Ateena Riiklikus Aias. Hoonet kasutatakse ametlike ja isiklike koosolekute ja tseremooniate korraldamiseks. Zappeioni hoonet kasutati 1896. aasta suveolümpiamängude peamise vehklemissaalina.

It is a fairy-tale themed cafe that will transfer you to parallel world of cartoons. It is super pretty outside with its decorations. Each holiday season it is decorated inside and outside. We visited Athens during the Christmas and the building and as well the street were all filled with Christmas decorations and spirit. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to see it inside. Every time we was in the area there was a super long queue, we had no time to waste standing in the queue and there are many other amazing places to visit in Athens instead of waiting.

Üks koht, mis mulle väga meeldis on teemaja nimega Little Kook. Tegemist on muinasjututeemalise kohvikuga, mis viib külastajad multifilmide paraleelmaailma. Majal on super ilusad kaunistused.

IMG_57724EA3DE84-0482-4A4F-B069-F521320832173098BEE0-F672-4C5C-93BD-4AB93BB4126BWe really liked the restaurant called Mironi. The food there was absolutely amazing!! We ordered Greek salad as the appetizer, thankfully we ordered one salad to share, even then the portion was way too big, but super delicious. After we had sat and enjoyed the wine we ordered for some time, we received free house wine, also free dessert and shots of some local liqueur. The house wine there is amazing. Unfortunately they didn’t know the exact name, or just didn’t want to tell us 😀 they said that it comes in big barrels and even in the menu there wasn’t written the name of the wine. The service was also really great!

Meile väga meeldis restoran Mironi. Söök seal oli lihtsalt võrratu. Tellisime eelroaks jagamiseks Kreeka salati.

Even though Piraeus is actually about 10 km away from the center of Athens it has still been considered the port of Athens since Ancient Greece. It is the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world. There are around 20 million passengers per year. The port also connects the peninsula with most Greek islands, and all cruise ships touring the Aegean Sea stop at Piraeus for at least one day. Piraeus is made up of three separate harbors: Katharos, Zea and Munichia. The easiest and cheapest way to get to Piraeus harbor is by the subway. It takes around 20 minutes from the city center of Athens.

Kuigi Piraeus asub Ateena kesklinnast umbes 10 km kaugusel, peetakse seda siiski Vana-Kreeka aegadest Ateena sadamaks. Tegemist on suurima reisisadamaga Euroopas ja suuruselt teisega maailmas. Aastas reisib läbi selle sadama umbes 20 miljonit reisijat. Sadam ühendab Kreeka peamist poolsaart enamiku Kreeka saartega ning kõik Egeuse merel seilavd kruiisilaevad peatud seal vähemalt üheks päevaks. Piraeusi sadam koosneb kolmest eraldi osast: Katharos, Zea ja Munichia. Lihtsaim ja odavaim viis sadamsse jõudmiseks on metroo. Metrooga jõuab Ateena kesklinnast umbes 20 minutiga.

AFC48ABC-9562-4142-9D69-9FE7F2ED5023No visits to Greece is complete without visiting its islands, right. We were planning to visit at least two of them but since we were there during the Christmas, the ferry schedule was different and it was not possible to change the island when we wanted. So we ended up visiting only Naxos island. The return ticket from Athes was 50€ per person. The journey takes a bit more than 5 hours. On the way to Naxos the weather was stormy and it took around 6 hours to get to the island. It is also possible to get there by plane, which should take maximum one hour.

Ükski Kreeka külastus pole täiuslik ilma saarte külastamiseta. Meie kavatsesime külastada vähemalt kahte saart, kuid jõulude tõttu oli praami ajakava erinev ning meil polnud võimalik reisida ühe saare pealt teisele sel ajal kui me oleks soovinud. Seega me külastasime ainult Naxose saart. Edasi-tagasipilet maksis 50€ inimese kohta.

67BBD458-907A-44E5-AB4D-3858C1E7719CNaxos was so much different that Athens. When Athens was dirty, stinky, with many homeless people, then Naxos was so clean, calm and nice. The island has sooooo beautiful nature and also the all white buildings with the colorful decorations, doors and windows. All the colorful flowers look so pretty there with the white background. The weather in Naxos was quite warm but super windy. In the end of December we got almost all the possible weather conditions – sun, rain, wind and even hail.

08371B98-07E5-4EFA-9701-65873A1761F9There are many traditional little villages to visit.

Saarel on mitmeid traditsioonilisi väikseid külasid.

F839EC99-896B-4ECE-9DF5-CDC47F349922The prettiest place in Naxos is the Mount Zeus. It is 1400 m high and the highest point of the Cyclades. It was considered as Zeus’ birthplace by ancient Greeks. We decided to visit the Cave of Zeus which was around 20 minutes hike from the car parking. It is said that Zeus spent his childhood at this cave. The hike to the summit of Mount Zeus takes around one hour. The hike is actually quite hard and can even say dangerous. Most of the hike there is no actual road, you will be climbing on the rocks. Even though we didn’t climb to the highest point of this mountain, it already offered amazing panoramic views of Naxos. We also saw a really nice sunset and met many sheep and goats. Before visiting the mountain I read one blog post where the writer wrote that even though it is quite easy hike to not wear flip flops. Well, I want to add DEFINITELY no not wear flip flops! It is way too rocky and slippery for these.

Ilmselt kõige ilusam koht Naxosel on Zeusi mägi. Zeusi mäe kõrgus on 1400 meetrit, mis teeb sellest Küklaadide kõrgeima punkti. Muistsed kreeklased pidasid seda Zeusi sünnikohaks. Meie otsustasime külastada Zeusi koobast, mis on auto parkimisplatsist umbes 20-minutilise matka kaugusel. Uskumuste kohaselt veetis Zeus oma lapsepõlve selles koopas. Zeusi mäetipp on umbes tunniajase matka kaugusel.

The hotel ruins offer so pretty views and also really amazing street art.

The statue is huge, just the foot itself is around 2,5 meters high. It is one of two that have been found on the island. Even though these are incomplete and ancient they certainly look like modern minimalist art. By the way people were making these with copper and wooden tools and transporting them over many miles to their sites several thousand years ago.

Üks huvitav koht on Kouros of Apollonas, mis on suured iidsest maailmast pärit kujud. Need kujud on hiiglaslikud, ainult jalg juba on umbes 2,5 meetrit kõrge. See on üks kahest saarelt leitud hiiglaslikust kujust.

It has a beautiful waterfront, views of the port, cozy cafes and restaurants. Walk in the old town of Chora offers so many beautiful emotions and views. The most known sight is probably Portara which is the only remain of an unfinished Temple dedicated to Apollo and it was built in the 6th century B.C. Greek Mythology says that Theseus abandoned the Minoan princess Ariadne here, right after he killed the Minotaur. Then, she was forced to marry Dionysus. It was built entirely in marble. It is considered to be the symbol of the Naxos island.

The castle was built during the Venetian occupation. The streets around the castle and in old town of Chora are narrow, following the traditional style of medieval architecture which are now lined with shops and restaurants.

Saare teine tuntud vaatamisväärsus on Naxose kindlus. Kindlus ehitati Veneetsia okupatsiooni ajal. Lossi ümbruses ja Chora vanalinnas asuvad tänavad on kitsad, järgides keskaegse arhitektuuri traditsioonilist stiili, mis on tänapäeval ümbritsetud mitmete kaupluste ja restoranidega.

96DE79FC-369B-456F-A299-58D215EF2CDFE91F4DF7-19CE-4E9B-8F1B-A87117FE2264Naxos island is more of a summer destination and that’s why most of the shops, bars and restaurants were closed during our visit. There are also so many different car rental companies, but pretty much all of them were closed. The reason why they were closed can also be because we were on island on three Christmas days December 24-26. Eventually we did find one rental company – Hertz – which was open. The also received really good service from the rental sales agent there. When driving in Naxos be ready for the narrow mountain roads. But the drive definitely offers incredible views and is totally worth the drive.

B1E05718-D981-4C57-A4E8-76116E10395046E6EAAB-177B-4068-AFB6-D2F0DDF61461The most popular cafe is definitely Cream on Top. No matter what day or time we went there it was always packed. It was a struggle to get a free table. When most of the people just go there for coffee and smoking, then we went there for food. Oh how amazing the food was there. We tried so many different dishes and can say that their fresh salads are the best! The only thing that bothered me was the fact that all the local people are smoking there, inside of that quite small room. It is crazy. Even though they have a sign on their door – no smoking. I actually asked about it from one of the waiters and he said ” ah it is just normal thing here, and everybody are doing it. I can tell them that you don’t like it if you want”. I said that would be nice, but you can guess whether he actually said anything or no. The cafe is right at the promenade, about 15 minutes walk from the harbor. One morning I ordered pancakes with eggs and bacon. I thought that this dish looks as in USA where everything is on one plate, on one side there are pancakes and other side eggs and bacon. Actually between every pancake there were bacon and on top of everything was an egg 😀 But all together it was super tasty.

Saare kõige populaarsem kohvik on kahtlemata Cream on Top.

We experienced the best service there. The waiters were so friendly, nice. Pretty much as soon as we sipped our water, one of them came to fill the glass again. They also take your jackets and coats and put them away. They actually come to ask if everything is good, do you need something else? The food was also great there plus we got free shots of a local liqueur.

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetSo many toilets in cafes, bars and restaurants are without locks in Greece. A closed door should mean the toilet is taken. But I also saw some toilets where the door just didn’t stay open. So if the door is closed, knock on it. Many of the tourists are not aware of this and close the door behind them even after they are done. Many of them also had warnings not to flush the toilet paper, it may cause the blockage. And I actually read about it that it has a very simple explanation. Greek sewage pipes are approximately 2 inches (50mm) in diameter. For example American and British plumbing is twice as large 4 inches (100mm). That’s why the Greek pipes get clogged. A Minoan king of Crete invented the first flushing toilet more than 2,800 years ago. Toilet paper wasn’t invented until the 1900s, and Greece is an ancient civilization.

A51D41A3-5162-4C7C-9754-BB38D76FF191Most of the restaurants in Naxos offers great views.

Enamus Naxosel asuvaid restorane pakuvad ilusaid vaateid.

IMG_6803So when in Greece definitely visit the Greek Tavern. A taverna is a small Greek restaurant which of course serves Greek cuisine. The traditional Greek cuisine includes: bread, lamb, pork, beef, salad, fish, seafood, tzatziki (which is yoghurt, garlic and cucumber dip), souvlaki (small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled), wine and spirits (ouzo and Metaxa brandy). Another popular Greece fast food is Gyros which consists of chicken or lamb, french fries, onions, and tomatoes all wrapped up in soft pita bread. Ouzo is a dry anise-flavored aperitif. For us Ouzo didn’t leave much of an impression, but I brought it for my parents and they liked the smell, it reminded them of their younghood. Also try some Greek coffee, but be aware it is really strong. You also have to let the waitress know whether you prefer it with sugar, sweet, medium or without sugar. The sugar can’t be added afterwards. Frappe is made with instant coffee, water and sugar. Greece and Cyprus are actually fighting over where it is originally from. Then there is the freddo cappuccino with is espresso topped with frothy milk. The freddo espresso which is just swirled espresso over ice. All of them are served cold. When you are ordering coffee the waitresses will usually bring some small Greek desserts, cakes or croissants also.

Kreekat külastades külastage kindlasti Kreeka taverneid. Taverna on väike Kreeka restoran, kus pakutaktse Kreeka toite. Ouzo on kuiv aniisimaitseline aperatiiv.
