New York City & Philadelphia

I used to have a kind of mixed feelings about New York City. It had been on top of my list of places I would like to visit for a long time. My hopes were up. I really love skyscrapers and was super excited to see the famous NYC high buildings. After my trip I was often asked how was my trip, how was NYC, I and didn’t know how to answer to them. I kind of felt that I expected more. I am embarrassed to admit it but I was kind of disappointed. I think it may have been too enormous, busy for me. Too much to take in. Or maybe I just couldn’t believe that my dream has come true, that I can actually walk the roads that I have seen so many times on TV. But now when I look back at my trip and the photos it has become one of my favorite cities. I want to go back so badly because there are so many places I didn’t have time to visit and so many new cool tourist attractions and also the vibe there is just indescribable. I would love to see these skyscrapers again.

Tahan New Yorki kindlasti tagasi minna.

52ED3279-D6D5-4617-A3C6-60BC655423AFNew York City is the most populous and most densely populated major city in the United States. It is located on the New York state. It is one of the world’s most populous megacities. NYC has been described as the cultural, financial and media capital of the world. The city is situated on one of the world’s largest natural harbors. New York is home to the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world. The area of the New York City is 1,213.37 km2 and there lives more than 8 million people. If I combine it with Estonia where lives around 1,3 million people in the country area of 45,227 km2.  You may understand why I may have had hard to express my feelings after the trip and why it may have been taken a bit longer to digest this experience and city 😀

New York City on kõige suurema rahvaarvuga ja kõige tihedama rahvaasutusega linn Ameerika Ühendriikides. New York City asub New Yorgi osariigis ning see on üks maailma rahvarikkamaid megalinnu. New York Cityt on kirjeldatud kui maailma kultuuri-, finants- ja meediapealinnu. Linn asub ühes maailma suurimas loodussadamas. New Yorgis elab suurim arv miljardäre maailmas. 😀

7920FF2F-132D-4FEC-9362-F6A5E9920F44New York City is home for many well known districts and landmarks, including to three of the world’s then most visited tourist attractions in 2013; it holds a record of 62.8 million tourists visiting the city in 2017. The biggest tourist attraction is actually Manhattan which is one of the fifth NYC areas. Manhattan is like its own world with its 57 km2. It is probably one of the most famous neighborhoods in the world thanks to being shown in so many movies and TV series. You can experience almost everything there  – rich, poor, clean, dirty, noisy, fancy, rebel.. For me it was already amazing just to being able to walk on these famous streets.

New York City on koduks mitmele tuntud linnaosadele ja vaatamisväärsustele, sealhulgas kolmele 2013. aastal maailma kõige külastatavamale turismiatraktsioonile. Linna külastas 2017. aastal rekordarv turiste, 62,8 millionit turisti. Linna suurim turismiatraksioon on tegelikult üks viiesti linnaosast – Manhattan. Manhattan on oma 57 km2 suurusega nagu omaette maailm. Manhattanit on näidatud paljudes filmides ja teleseriaalides, mis on sellest teinud tõenäoliselt ühe kuulsama linnaosa maailmas. Seal on võimalik kogeda peaagu kõike – rikkust, vaesust, puhtust, räpasust, lärmi, vaikust, uhkust.. Minu jaoks oli uskumatu juba kõigest võimalus Manhattani tänavatel jalutada.

4BF13F37-FE03-4344-A30D-AE33898180542E6B0778-BFEE-43CB-89FA-0ABD69F93B99Times Square is a major center of the world’s entertainment industry and one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections. There are huge commercial screens, brightly lit by numerous billboards and advertisements. It is sometimes referred to as “the Crossroads of the World”, “the Center of the Universe” and “the heart of the World”. It is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District. Times Square is one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions, over 460,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square on its busiest days. It is also the site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. About one million revelers crowd Times Square for the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The New Year’s Eve celebrations being held in Times Square started on December 31st in 1904. Famous skyscraper Times Tower was built in years 1903-1905 in Times Square. The newspaper New York Times moved in to this tower officially in December 31st in 1904. It was being celebrated with huge fireworks on the New Year’s Eve and since that day huge amount of people gather to Times Square every New Year’s Eve. I had seen so many photos and videos about that street so I was a bit afraid to visit it in the dark, I thought these flashing screens will make me feel dizzy. After I had seen it in the day light I still decided to go back in the dark, to get the real experience of it. No matter when I visited it the square was always super crowded and it was really hard to walk there or to stop for photos.

Times Square on maailma meelelahutustööstuse oluline keskus ja üks elavamaid jalakäijate tänavaid maailmas. Tänavalt leiab tohutu suured kaubanduslikud ekraanid, mida valgustavad arvukad reklaamid ja kuulutused. Times Sqaure nimetatakse “maailma ristteeks”, “universumi keskuseks” ja “maailma südameks”. See on ka Broadway teatripiirkonna keskus. Times Square on üks maailma enimkülastatud turismiobjekte, oma parimatel päevadel läbib seda üle 460 000 jalakäija. See on ka iga-aastaste aastavahetuse pidustuste hulka kuuluva pallilangemise koht. Umbes miljon inimest koguneb Times Square aastavahetuse pidustustest osa saama. Aastatel 1903-1905 ehitati kuulus Times Tower, aja torn Times Squareil. Ajalehe New York Times tornil oli 25 korrust.

The founder of Chrysler Corporation Walter Chrysler and the creator of General Motors John Jacob Raskob were competing with each other who can build a taller skyscraper. Which one of the buildings will be taller – Empire State Building or Chrysler building? They both kept things hidden and revealed many secrets at the end, so eventually Empire State Building turned out to be taller but Chrysler building is said to be brighter, more special and exciting. Empire State Building is a 102-story art deco wonder which is 443,2 meters tall together with the tower and antenna spire. It is proud to have named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The building was constructed every day, without celebrating holidays or Sundays, with one year and 45 days. After the building was finished there was a financial crisis in the States which meant that there was no one who had enough money to rent rooms in the brandnew skyscraper. This gave a nickname to the building – Empty State Building. The building didn’t end up with a bankrupty just thanks to two observatories decks on the 86th and 102nd floor. Everyone wanted to admire the view over one of the biggest cities in the world. From the ground to the top there are 1860 stairs. The building is that tall when you are standing on the ground it is impossible to see the top of the building. The building also gives the nickname to the state of New York – Empire State. These 86th and 102nd floor observatories provide 360° views to New York City and beyond. On the 2nd floor there are exhibits which take guests to the journey from the building’s construction to its place in pop culture today. The ticket to 86th floor observatories costs $42 for adults, $36 for children. The 102nd floor observatories entrance costs $72 for adults and $66 for children. Yes it is pricey, but in my opinion it is totally worth it!

Minu nimekirja tipus oli maailmakuulsa Empire State Buildingu külastamine. Chrysler Corporationi rajaja Walter Chrysler ja General Motorsi looja John Jacob Raskob asusid omavahel võistlema kumb suudab kõrgema pilvelõhkuja püsti panna. Mõlemad hoidsid detaile saladused ning lõpuks osutus Empire State Building kõrgemaks, kuid Chrysleri hoonet peatakse erilisemaks ja põnevamaks. Hoone ehitamine käis päev päeva järel, ei pühi ega pühapäevi. Empire State Buildingu ehitamine võttis aega vaid ühe aasta ja 45 päeva. Newyorklased andsid tollasele maailma kõrgemaile hoonele isegi sobiva nime – Empty (tühi) State Building. Maapinnast tippu on 1860 trepiastet. Hoonet on kutsutud kaheksandaks maailma imeks ning see annab hüüdnime ka New Yorgi osariigile – Empire State.

AC88D9A6-F76A-43E2-A42E-E92BFC091812B1797A62-E0E9-444D-A537-FE0BCFCC967FAnother skyscraper mentioned above, Chrysler Building, has been decorated to look as a part of the car. The skyscraper has 3862 windows! These skyscrapers keep the New York windows washers really busy.

Pilevelõhkujal on 3862 akent, mis hoiab New Yorgi aknapesijad töös.

Another famous skyscraper is Flatiron Building. It was built in 1902 and was one of the first skyscrapers in New York. It is located in Manhattan on the crossing of 23. street and Broadway. The two street intersect here so that there is an triangle shaped island between them. Daniel Burnham found a place where he can build his building without being surrounded by other buildings. The Flatiron Building has 22 floors and its 87 meters tall and projected in triangle shape. The building was situated on the most windy street of the city. So there were placed policemen to scare away the gentlemen who stopped to stare at women whose dresses and skirts had been rised by the wind. This building became a symbol of a modern city.

Maja ise on 87 meetrit kõrge.

67C6ABBE-6135-485E-AA07-6C25B1FE2627One great place to admire these skyscrapers is from the Brooklyn Promenade which is a pedestrian walkway spanning. There are also nice brownstone buildings in Brooklyn worth to check out.

Üks suurepärane koht pilvelõhkujate imetlemiseks on Brooklyni Promenaad, mis on tee jalakäijatele. Brooklynis on ka ilusad pruunid kivist honed, mida tasuks samuti vaadata.

A7CF8EFA-47A0-4877-925F-452B9EA6AC51IMG_3485In 1860 Brooklyn was a separate city, the third biggest one in the United States of America. In 1898 Brooklyn became a part of New York City metropolis. Before the connection of these two cities the Brooklyn Bridge needed to be built of course. The chief engineer John Augustus Roebling who came up with that idea died before he was even able to start with the construction works. His work was continued by his son Washington Roebling and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge started on 3rd of January 1870. The bridge was built with 14 extremely hard years. During the construction 27 people died and the chief engineer himself got very sick. He never set a foot on the bridge himself! After gotten sick he taught his wife Emily about the higher mathematics and bridge construction. Emily was the link between bridge builders and the engineer. Washington Roebling was keeping an eye on the construction through the telescope from his bedroom, as well the opening of the bridge. The total length of the bridge is 1825 meters, it hangs 41 meters above the river. In 1919, a pilot named Giorgio Pessi led the biggest plane in that time, under this bridge! Now the bridge is linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, and is a New York icon. The pedestrian walkway on the bridge gives panoramic views across the city from downtown up to midtown. All the major buildings are visible from there. We were lucky to get there at the golden hour. The views were even more incredible. Just be careful and aware of the biking roads and crowds.

1898. aastal sai Brooklynist New Yorgi osa. 1919. aastal juhtis piloot Giorgi Pessi tolleagse maailma suurima lennuki Brooklyni silla alt läbi! Nüüd ühendab sild Manhattani ja Brooklyni linnaosasid ning on New Yorgi ikooniks. Sillal asuv jalakäijate tee pakub panoraamvaateid kogu linnale.

IMG_3610IMG_3614IMG_3622IMG_3623IMG_3604One of the most popular Instagram photo location is DUMBO which is short of Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. On most of the photos online it looks like it is a quite empty and calm place where to take photos. Actually the main photoshoot place is right at the crossroads of cars. So go there early to get a perfect shoot and be aware of the cars.

Üks populaarsemaid Instragrami piltide pildistamise kohti on DUMBO, mis on lühend Manhattani Silla Viadukti all. Tegelikult asub fotode tegemist koht otse ristmikul. Seega minge varakult kohale, et saada täiuslik pilt ja samas olge tähelepanelik autode suhtes.

320FC5D4-9DAF-4D40-8D1B-5B43CCDC460FGrand Central Terminal is a commuter rail terminal in Midtown Manhattan. It is 143 meters long, 49 meters wide and 46 meters high. It has 44 platforms, which is more than any other railroad station in the world. The distinctive architecture and interior design of Grand Central Terminal’s station house have earned it several landmark designations, including as a National Historic Landmark. Grand Central Terminal is one of the world’s ten most visited tourist attractions. It also contains a variety of stores and food vendors, including a food court on its lower-level concourse. The terminal was opened in 1913. In the main hall the artist Paul Helleu and Charles Basin painted 2,500 stars on the ceiling which were supposed to represent the sky over autumn-night Manhattan. It happened that this painting accidentally went wrong, as if looking at the stars not from below on the ground but instead from the glory of the sky. The mistake was not corrected so the stars are still as upside down.

Grand Central Terminal on pendelrongiterminal Manhattani kesklinnas. Terminal on 143 meetirt pikk, 49 meetrit lai ja 46 meetrit kõrge. Sellel on 44 platvormi, mida on rohkem kui üheski teises raudteejaamas maailmas. Grand Central Terminali jaamahoone  omapärane arhitektuur ja sisekujundus on pälvinud mitmeid oluliste maamärkide tähistusi, sealhulgas ka Rahvusliku Ajaloolise Maamärgi tähise. Grand Central Terminal on üks kümnest enimkülastatud turismiobjektist maailmas. Jaamas on mitmeid poode ja toitlustuskohti. Terminal avati 1913. aastal.

It is the most visited urban park in the United States as well as one of the most filmed locations in the world. The park covers 3.41 km2 which makes it larger than two of the world’s smallest nations, Monaco and Vatican City.   I only visited a small part of this famous park. But if you have more time to discover this huge park I have heard that Bethesda fountain, the arches, Alice in Wonderland statue, Strawberry fields and Imagine memorial are definitely worth to visit. “Imagine” memorial is dedicated to John Lennon.

Veel üks kuulus koht NYC-s on Central Park. Tegemist on Ameerika Ühendriikide enimkülastatud linnapargiga, samuti on see üks enim filmitud kohti maailmas! “Imagine”mäletusmärk on pühendatud John Lennonile.

The linear park is 2,33km long. It was opened in 2009 and since then it has become an icon of contemporary landscape architecture. The train line used to service the west side of Manhattan but became out of service in 1980. After it became out of commission, the surrounding neighborhoods came together and recreated the track into a long park, bringing this space back to life.

Lineaarpargi pikkuseks on 2,33 m. Park avati 2009. aastal ja sellest ajast on sellest saanud kaasaegse maastikuarhitektuuri ikoon. Rongiliin teenindas Manhattani läänepoolset külge, kuid selle kasutamine lõpetati 1980. aastal. Pärast rongiliikluse lõppemist, muutsid ümberkaudsete linnaosade inimesed rööbastee pargiks, äratades koha uuesti ellu.

The copper statue was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. It was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel became famous few decades later with its own spectacular tower in Paris. The statue was unveiled in 1886. It is a symbol of freedom and opportunity for all who enter the US. The statue holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed the date of US Declaration of Independence. The crown on the head of the statue has 25 windows which symbolize the twenty five gemstones found on the land. The seven rays of the crown symbolize the world’s seas and continents. The platform where the statue stands was built in the states, no rich people donated money for it. The donation came just from the ordinary people all whose names were publish on the newspaper even when the donation was only few cents.

Vabadussammas on New Yorgi sadamas Liberty saarel asuv tohutu uusklassitsistlik skulptuur. Kuju oli Prantsusmaa inimeste kingitus Ameerika Ühendriikide inimestele. Samba raudskeleti ehk karkassi kavandas kümmekond aastat hiljem omaenda torniga maailmakuulsaks saanud insener Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel ise. Kuju avati 1886. aastal. Tahvlil, mida hiigelleedi vasakus käes hoiab, on kirjas 4.juuli 1776 – Ühendriikide iseseivusdeklatsatsiooni vastuvõtmise aeg. Kuju ehitati Prantsumaal, kuju all olev platvorm USAS.

IMG_3636The Vessel is a structure and visitor attraction. It was opened in March 2019. The Vessel is a honeycomb-like structure that rises 16 stories, consists of 154 flights of stairs, 2,500 steps and 80 landings for visitors to climb. Visiting the Vessel is free of charge but you just need to book a time beforehand from here.

Eelnevalt tuleb lihtsalt siin aeg broneerida.

IMG_4587The newest attraction in NYC is the Edge. It is sooooo cool, I wish it was opened when I was there but the Edge was only opened in March 2020. It is an observation deck in Level 100 which offers 360° degree New York views. It is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. It has a GLASS FLOOR!! How exciting is this! The ticket costs online $36 for adults and $31 for kids. The ticket also includes free digital souvenir photo.

Kõige uuem vaatamisväärsus NYCs on Edge. See on lihtsalt niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii vinge! Kahjuks avati the Edge alles märtsis 2020. Tegemist on 100ndal korrusel asuva vaateplatvormiga, mis pakub 360° kraadist vaadet New York Cityle. See on läänepoolkera kõrgeim väliplatvorm ning sellel on klaaspõrand. Lihtsalt ui äge see tundub! Internetist ostes maksab pilet täiskavanutele $36 ja lastele $31. Antud pilet sisaldab ka tasuta digitaalset suveniirfotot.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is commemorating the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed 2,977 people, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing which killed six. The memorial is located at the former location of the Twin Towers that were destroyed during the attacks in 2001. A memorial was planned in the immediate aftermath of the attacks and destruction of the World Trade Center for the victims and those involved in rescue and recovery operations. A dedication ceremony commemorating the tenth anniversary of the attacks was held at the memorial on September 11, 2011, and it opened to the public the following day. The museum was dedicated on May 15, 2014 and was opened to the public on May 21. I didn’t want to take a photo of the memorial and it kind of made me sad seeing people posing with a huge smiles in front of it. For me this is disrespectful to pose there like this.

Mind tegi kurvaks kuidas inimesed poseerisid suure naeratuse saatel mälestusmärgi ees. Minu jaoks on see lugupidamatu.

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. It was established on 1895.

New Yorgi Avalik Raamatukogu on suuruselt teine avalik raamatukogu Ameerika Ühendriikides (Kongressiraamatukogu järel) ja suuruselt kolmas maailmas (Briti Raamatukogu järel). Hoone kuulutati 1965. aastal Rahvuslikuks Ajalooliseks Maamärgiks. Raamatukogu asutati 1895. aastal.

0FBAA442-07A8-416F-BA9E-E12311C8B219St. Patrick’s Cathedral is one of New York’s most famous landmarks. This neo-Gothic style Catholic cathedral was built by in the 1800s as a replacement for Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Chinatown.

Püha Patricku Katedraal on üks New Yorgi kuulsamaid vaatamisväärsusi. Tegemist on uusgooti stiilis katoliku katedraaliga, mis ehitati 1800. aastatel Hiinalinnas asunud Vana Püha Patricku katedraali asendajana.

35C7CF08-9892-4248-92DC-E3BCB466DE24When in NYC I totally recommend to eat PIZZA. There are so many pizza places where you can buy a HUGE slice or whole pizza. I honestly have never got anywhere better pizza than in NYC (sorry Italy :D).

New Yorgis soovitan kindlasti süüa PITSAt.

IMG_3714IMG_4181Another awesome place I recommend to visit is Tipsy Scoop which is known for their liquor-infused ice creams that gets you ice cream wasted 🙂 how cool is this 😀 Flavors are for example like Strawberry Rhubarb Bourbon, Red Velvet Martini..

Üks vinge koht, mida kindlasti soovitan on Tipsy Scoop, mis on tuntud oma alkoholiga segatud jäätiste poolest. Maitsetest on näiteks valikus Maasika-rabarberi Bourbon ja Red Velver Martiini..

IMG_4624In NYC I also recommend having your meal at a local Deli. Delis is like a corner grocery store which also makes fresh sandwiches and other dishes. The store is specialized in imported meat & cheeses.

New York Cityt külastades soovitan einetada kohalikus Delis.

There are many opportunities where to do day trips from NYC. I decided to visit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia, with a nickname Philly is about two hours bus ride away from NYC. The return ticket costs around $20. Philly is the largest city of Pennsylvania and the sixth most populous city in US. The area of Philadelphia is 369.59 km2 and there lives around 1,5 million people. Philadelphia is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States. An English Quaker, William Penn founded the city in 1682 to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony. The city has an instrumental role in the American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States, who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 at the Second Continental Congress and the Constitution at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. Philadelphia was the nation’s largest city until being overtaken by New York City in 1790. The city was also one of the nation’s capitals during the revolution, serving as temporary US capital while Washington D.C was under construction.

New York pakub mitmeid ühepäevareisi võimalusi. Mina otsustasin külastada Philadelphiat, Penssylvanias. Philadelphia, hüüdnimega Philly, asub NYC-st umbes kahetunnise bussisõidu kaugusel. Edasi-tagasi pilet maksab umbes $20. Philadelphia on Pennsylvania suurim linn ja USA suuruselt kuues linn. Linna pindala on 369.59 km2 ja seal elab umbes 1,5 miljonit inimest. Philadelphia on üks vanimaid omavalitsusi Ameerika Ühendriikides. Inglise kveeker William Penn rajas linna 1682. aastal Pennsylvania koloonia pealinnaks.

492627B8-1F98-4A64-A65F-15F31C150BEEPhiladelphia’s nickname is “city of brotherly love”. William Penn set out to build a capital for his new settlement and named it as Philadelphia after the biblical Greek colony, whose name meant city of brotherly love. Penn wanted Philly to be place where friendly culture and the freedom to worship were adopted.

Philadelphia hüünimeks on “vennaliku armastuse linn“. William Penn kavatses oma uuele asulale ehitada pealinna ja nimestas selle Piibli Kreeka koloonia järgi Philadelphiaks, mis tähendab vennaliku armastuse linna. Penn soovis, et Philly oleks koht, kus võetakse vastu sõbralik kultuur ja jumalateenistusvabadus.

IMG_4347Both the United Stated Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted in the Independence Hall of Philadelphia. The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The building is part of Independence National Historical Park and is listed as a World Heritage Site. Independence National Historical Park is recognized as the birthplace of American democracy. In 1776 the founding fathers came together here to sign the Declaration of Independence.  Today the building is the centerpiece of the park, and includes the buildings Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Franklin Court, the Bishop White House, New Hall Military Museum and  Liberty Bell. Philadelphia is a home for the Liberty Bell which is an iconic symbol of American independence. The Liberty Bell is located in the Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park. Visiting the Liberty Bell is free of charge. The bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from the London. In its early years, the bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alerts citizens about public meetings and proclamations.

Mõlemad, nii Ameerika Ühendriikide Iseseivusdeklaratsioon kui ka Ameerika Ühendriikide Põhiseadus võeti vastu Philadelphia Iseseivussaalis. Hoone valmis 1753. aastal Pennsylvania riigimajana. Hoone on osa Iseseivuse Riiklikust Ajaloopargist ning on kantud UNESCO maailmapärandi nimistusse. Independence National historical Parki peetakse Ameerika demokraatia sünnikohaks. 1776. aastal tulid siin kokku riigi asutajad, et allkirjastada Iseseivusdeklaratsioon. Täna on antud hoone pargi osaks koos Kongressihalli, Franklini kohtu, Piiskopi Valge Maja, New Hall Militaarmuuseumi ja Vabaduse kellaga. Vabaduse kella peetakse Ameerika iseseisvuse ikooniliseks sümboliks. Vabaduse kell asub Vabaduse kella keskuses. Kella külastamine on tasuta.

The most popular one is probably LOVE sculpture. The sculpture was installed in 1976, but was briefly removed in 1978. Popular demand brought it back where it belongs. The statue is located at the John F. Kennedy Plaza which is better known as LOVE Park.

Kõige populaarsem neist on ilmselt LOVE skulptuur (ARMASTUSE skulptuur). Skulptuur paigaldati aastal 1976, kuid eemaldati aastal 1978. Suur nõudlus tõi skulptuuri tagasi sinna kuhu see kuulub. Kuju asub John F. Kennedy Plaza platsil, mida tuntakse paremini kui LOVE Park (Armastuse Park).

It is a suspension bridge across the Delaware River connecting Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It is a popular spot for outdoor activities. The total length of the bridge is 2 918 meters.

Philadelphia üks tuntumaid vaatamisväärsusti on Benjamin Franklini sild, originaalnimega Delaware jõesild. Tegemist on rippsillaga üle Delaware jõe, mis ühendab Pennsylvaniat ja New Jerseyt. See on populaarne koht välissportlastele ja niisama jalutajatele. Silla kogupikkuseks on 2918 meetrit.

Philadelphia City Hall serves as the seat of the municipal government of the City of Philadelphia, housing the chambers of the Philadelphia City Council and the offices of the Mayor of Philadelphia. It is also a courthouse. Philadelphia City Hall is the world’s largest free standing masonry building. It is also the largest and tallest City Hall in the US. It is possible to take a part of City Hall Interior Tour or just choose to take the Tower Tour only as did I. The tickets to Tower Tour can be purchased from City Hall Visitor Center. At City Hall Tower Observation Deck you can take in a different perspective of Philly from just beneath the eyes of the William Penn Statue. It is around 167 meters high. The Tower Tour ticket costs $8.

Samuti on asub seal kohtumaja. Mina külastasin ainult raekoja tornis asuvat vaateplatvormi. Torni külastamine maksab $8 ning pileteid saab osta Raekoja Külastuskeskusest. Raekoja Torni vaateplatvormil saab tutvuda Philadelphiaga William Penni ausamba alt. Torn on umbes 167 meetrit kõrge.

Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk is around 600 meters long pathway. The scenic route provides one of the best skyline perspectives around during every step of the journey.

South Streeti Overlook ja Schuylkilli Banks Boardwalk laudtee pakuvad ühte kõige ikoonilisemat vaadet. Schuylkilli Banks Boardwalk on umbes 600 meetri pikkune rada. Maaliline marsruut pakub igal sammul linna üht parimat siluetti pilvelõhkujatest.

77A9A051-A44F-40F7-8B2B-CFD509344226Elfreth’s Alley is a historic street, dating back to 1703. It claims to be the oldest residential street in the US. There are 32 houses on the street which were built between 1703 and 1836. The alley is a National Historic Landmark, located in the old city neighborhood. This is probably the most photographed street in the city.

Elfrethi Allee on ajalooline tänav, mis pärineb aastast 1703. Antud tänavat peetakse vanimaks elamutänavaks Ameerikas. Elfreth’s Alley tänval on 32 maja, mis on ehitatud ajavahemikus 1703-1836. Allee kuulub Riikliku Ajaloolise Maamärgi alla. Tänav asub vanalinna naabruses ning on ilmselt kõige enam pildistatud tänav Philadelphias.

C2EFDBDC-025D-421E-AA8D-DA81EBEAE4B997B6ECBC-F4BA-49F4-B963-6D1838A550D900957380-6165-43BD-8CCE-DA94FF715C4EAB8CA857-E9AC-4681-8D89-0575AFF77266Betsy Ross House is one of Philadelphia’s most popular historical buildings. It remains dedicated to its mission of preserving the historic site and interpreting the life of Betsy Ross, a working class, 18th century tradeswoman. Betsy Ross was a seamstress and flag-maker who lived 1752-1836. She is said to have sewed the first American flag. Actually the claim that Ross once lived there and that she designed and sewed the first American flag are considered false by most historians. Despite that the house is still one of the most visited tourist sites in Philadelphia.

Betsy Rossi maja on üks Pihladelphia populaarsemaid ajaloolisi ehitisi. Väidevalat õmbles just Betsy Ross esimese Ameerika lipu. Kuid hoolimata sellest on maja endiselt üks Philadelphia külastatavamaid turismisihtkohti.

IMG_4295Dilworth Park is located right next to City Hall. It is a popular gathering place for all Philadelphians. The park includes an outdoor café, computer-programmable fountain, performance space and activity areas for outdoor markets and ice-skating ring in season. I was visiting the park right after the Halloween celebrations were over and the park was prepared for the winter season, the Wintergarden preparation were on.

Dilworth Park asub kohe Raekoja kõral. Tegemist on populaarse kogunemispaigaga kõigile.

IMG_4394I also find the buildings of Philadelphia pretty.

Minu meelest on isegi Philadelphia majad ilusad.

IMG_4503IMG_4494IMG_4479Even though the must have in NYC is the bagel and cheesesteak in Philly, I tried a rainbow bagel at Chestnut Street Philly Bagels. The bagel stuffed with cream cheese was sooooo good.

Ehkki öeldakse, et New Yorki külastades tuleks kindlasti proovida nende bagelit (0 kujuline rõngassai) ja Phildelphias nende Cheesesteaki (hotdogi laadne võileib, mis koosneb õhukeselt viilutatud pruunistatud veiselihast, sulatatud juustust, praetud sibulast, paprikast, pruunistatud seentest ja ketšupist). Mina proovisin siiski bagelsit Chestnut Street Philly Bagelsis. Nende vikerkaarevärviline toorjuustuga täidetud bagel oli väga hea!

IMG_4474As I said before I had a short one day trip to Philly and because of the lack of time I missed so many cool places I would like to have visit. One of these is Front Street Walls which is a vibrant outdoor art gallery. As well many murals – Electric light mural, love letter mural, start from here mural and so on.

Nagu ma juba ennist mainisin oli minu Philadelphia reisi puhul tegemist ühepäeva reisiga ja seega jäid mul ajanappuse tõttu mitmed lahedad kohad külastamata. Üheks neist on Front Street Walls, mis on elav tänavakunsti täis välikunstigalerii. Samuti mitmed graffitid nagu näiteks Electric light mural, Love letter mural, Start from here mural jne.

If I had more time I may have visited Eastern State Penitentiary. It was at one time home to some of America’s most notorious mobsters, such as bank robber Willie Sutton and infamous gangster Al Capone. The prison was operational from 1829 until 1971 and the forerunner in the system of separate incarceration, the principle of which followed the idea of reform, not punishment. The penitentiary at the time was the largest public building ever to be erected and became a model for over 300 prisons worldwide. The prison is currently a US National Historic Landmark which is open to the public as a museum. It has been used as a location for television programs and films about hauntings.  Such are Twelve Monkeys, Return to Paradise, Animal Factory, Transformers: Revenge of the Falles.
